. . . observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord and his rules and his statutes.

Nehemiah 10:29b ESV

Abandoning their old ways and following the Law of Moses was a radical change from the life the Israelites

drifted into. They needed to learn humility and obedience and this type of submission always precedes growth.

Our greatest example of submission is Jesus. Listen as Paul describes Him in Philippians 2:8 “ . . . He humbled

himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” While that doesn’t sound like

growth, we know the rest of the story. Dying was only part of the plan. It always is. For something to grow,

there must be death.

The vision we have for our passion will meet many burials. As we submit not only to the Lord, but also those in

authority over us, many plans we have for our calling will need to die. When we let go for the sake of

obedience, we will see our dream flourish.

Read Psalm 1. Who is like a tree? How does this passage relate to growth in your calling?

Read Joshua 1:1-9. What is God calling Joshua to do? What phrase does He use repeatedly to encourage

Joshua?

Now, compare Joshua 1:8 with Psalm 1:1-3 and list the similarities.

What precedes success in both of these passages?
